Coffee with a Curator at the Dalí – Dr. Kimberly Macuare: Meeting the male gaze, Lee Miller as object and subject
September 1, 2021

Join us for this installment of our Coffee with a Curator series, where Museum Staff or invited guests speak on a range of Dalí-inspired topics.

In conjunction with our special exhibition, The Woman Who Broke Boundaries: Photographer Lee Miller, we invite you to enjoy a lecture from the Museum’s Co-Director of Innovation Labs and Director of Programming Dr. Kimberly Macuare. In this talk, Kimberly Macuare will explore the idea of “meeting the male gaze,” first in the sense of meeting as encountering or coming to know something and second as looking directly back at someone. Specifically, the lecture will provide a brief history of the concept of the male gaze, an idea first posited by film critic Laura Mulvey in 1975 and will subsequently explore Lee Miller’s work as a response to the male gaze, including thoughts on whether the male gaze can be resisted, subverted or co-opted.
